Active Ping Services List

As bloggers, we all want our new articles to be pushed out there so search engines and syndication services will know that we have a new post. Ping services, like Ping-o-Matic comes into the picture. This is one way to get indexed faster because search engine bots/crawlers will be informed that you have a new content up.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about ping services:

In blogging, a ping is an XML-RPC-based push mechanism by which a weblog notifies a server that its content has been updated. An XML-RPC signal is sent from the weblog to one or more “Ping Server(s)” (controlled by the weblog) to notify a list of their “Services” of new content on the weblog.

In this post, I will share the URLs you can use for automatic ping that are actually working and not a dead service.

note: The instruction below is geared towards self-hosted WordPress installations, however, you can easily implement the same in your favorite content management system (CMS). Simply find the setting area where it is possible to update the services to ping.

If you go to Options > Writing in your WordPress Dashboard, you will find a section called Update Services. This is what the description says:

When you publish a new post, WordPress automatically notifies the following site update services. For more about this, see Update Services on the Codex. Separate multiple service URLs with line breaks.

WordPress Dashboard: Options > Writing

If you have not changed this, there is one entry in it which is Ping-o-Matic is good and enough, not only it is the most popular ping service that pings all other services, it is also the most stable and longest running. Many of their competitors were long gone.

However, if you already changed it, you probably have a long list of sites to ping. I have no doubt that you got the list from the other sites and simply copy-pasted it. The problem with that is, they never checked if the services in their list is still active, majority are not. The result, you are telling your WordPress installation to ping a service that does not exist. Extra server load. Waste of server clock.

I took the time to clean it up and below you will find only six (6) out of more than thirty (30) from all the suggestions out there.

As of 2016-02-19, all the URLs above can be pinged. No more dead services. Less to ping. Healthy for your server.

Ping services are necessary in blogging. But do we need 30 URLs to ping, mostly dead already? On this post, I will give you only 6 that actually works.
